Dr George Motherby
Dr. George Motherby was a notable English physician and lexicographer who lived in the 18th century. Born in 1731 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, he was the son of George Motherby, a distinguished physician. He showed an interest in medicine from an early age and decided to follow in his father's footsteps.
Motherby studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, one of the leading medical schools of his time. He received his doctorate there in 1763 with a dissertation on smallpox, a disease that was widespread and feared at the time. After completing his studies, he returned to England and settled in London, where he built up a successful practice.
In addition to his medical work, Motherby was also a passionate lexicographer. He is best known for his work "A New Medical Dictionary", first published in 1775. This dictionary was one of the first of its kind and offered a comprehensive collection of medical terms and definitions. It was published in several editions and was a valuable reference work for doctors and medical students.
Motherby's interest in medicine and science extended beyond his practice and his dictionary. He was a member of the Royal Society, one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific societies in the world. This membership testifies to his commitment to the scientific community and his contribution to medical research.
Dr. George Motherby died in 1793, but left a lasting legacy in the medical world. His dictionary was used for many years after his death and is considered an important milestone in the history of medical literature.
