Edward Henry Potthast
Edward Henry Potthast was born on June 10, 1857, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was an American Impressionist, best known for his vivid depictions of beach scenes. Potthast began his artistic education at the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati, where he studied under the German painter Thomas Satterwhite Noble. His early training laid the foundation for his later career as a painter, which made him one of the best known American Impressionists.
In 1881, Potthast moved to Europe to continue his studies. He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under Carl von Marr. This time in Europe was crucial to his artistic development, as he had the opportunity to study the works of the European masters firsthand. After returning to the United States in 1885, Potthast worked as an illustrator to earn a living while continuing to paint.
Potthast eventually settled in New York City, where he joined the artist community and began exhibiting his work in prestigious galleries. His paintings, which often depicted scenes of beaches and parks, were praised for their vibrant colors and ability to capture the light. Potthast was a master at capturing the joy and lightheartedness of life in his paintings, which earned him a loyal following.

Potthast was known to often paint on the beaches of New York and New England, where he drew inspiration directly from nature.
