Ernst Haeckel

Ernst Haeckel was not only an important biologist and natural scientist of the 19th century, but also a gifted artist whose works continue to fascinate today. Born on February 16, 1834 in Potsdam, Haeckel developed a deep interest in nature at an early age. After studying medicine, he turned to zoology and became an advocate of Darwin's theory of evolution, which he supported with his own research. His artistic streak developed in the detailed depictions of microorganisms, plants and animals that he discovered on his research trips.

Haeckel's artworks are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also scientifically valuable. They served as detailed illustrations to science and helped make complex biological structures accessible to a wider audience. His ability to capture the beauty of nature in his drawings and watercolors made him a pioneer in combining art and science. Perhaps his best-known work, the "Art Forms of Nature", published between 1899 and 1904, is still an impressive testimony to this symbiosis and inspires artists and scientists worldwide.

Interesting fact:

Ernst Haeckel coined the term "ecology" and thereby laid the foundation for a new scientific field that studies the relationships between organisms and their environment. His passion for nature was reflected not only in his scientific work, but also in his art, which often served as a bridge between the two worlds.
