Evelyn de Morgan

Evelyn de Morgan, born Evelyn Pickering on 30 August 1855 in London, was a notable English painter, best known for her Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite works. She grew up in a wealthy and educated family that supported her artistic ambitions. From a young age she showed a great talent for painting, which led her to study at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, one of the first art schools to accept women.

De Morgan was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which opposed the academic norms of art and advocated a return to the detailed and vibrant depictions of pre-Raphael art. Her works are known for their bright colors, complex compositions, and profound symbolic content. She was not only a talented painter, but also a committed feminist and pacifist who used her art to convey social and political messages.

In 1887, she married the well-known ceramic artist William De Morgan. The couple shared not only a deep personal connection, but also an artistic partnership that influenced their respective works. While William specialized in ceramics, Evelyn focused on painting, with both artists inspired by the ideas of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which emphasized craftsmanship and artistic quality.
