Felix Vallotton

Félix Vallotton, born December 28, 1865 in Lausanne, Switzerland, was a remarkable artist best known for his astute and often critical depictions of society. His art spans a variety of media including painting, woodcut and illustration. Vallotton moved to Paris at the age of sixteen to study art and quickly became part of the thriving avant-garde scene. His early works were primarily portraits and landscapes, but he soon gained recognition for his woodcuts, characterized by their clean lines and dramatic contrasts.

Over the course of his career, Vallotton developed a distinctive style that set him apart from his contemporaries. His works are characterized by precise lines and an often dark, satirical view of the bourgeoisie and the human condition. Vallotton was also a member of the artist group Les Nabis, known for their Symbolist approaches and their influence on the development of modern art. Despite his affiliation with this group, Vallotton maintained his unique artistic voice, characterized by deep social and psychological insight.

Interesting fact:

Vallotton had a particular fascination with the medium of woodcut, which he revolutionized by using it for modern, often satirical themes. He is often referred to as the "innovator of woodcuts in the 20th century." His technique and style influenced not only his contemporaries, but also later generations of artists. Vallotton's contribution to the art of woodcutting is so significant that he is sometimes referred to as the "Magician of Woodcutting."
