Francesco Borromini

Francesco Borromini, born Francesco Castelli on September 25, 1599 in Bissone, was an outstanding architect of the Baroque era. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Roman Baroque architecture and was known for his innovative and often unconventional designs. Borromini came from a family of stonemasons and architects, which influenced his early approach to architecture and building.

His career began in Milan, where he worked as a stonemason, before moving to Rome in 1619. In Rome, he first worked under Carlo Maderno, a relative who was the city's leading architect at the time. After Maderno's death in 1629, Borromini collaborated with Gian Lorenzo Bernini, another giant of Baroque architecture. This collaboration, however, was marked by tensions, as both architects had different artistic visions.

Borromini's breakthrough as an architect in his own right came with the commission for the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, also known as San Carlino. This project, which he completed between 1634 and 1644, is considered a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Borromini used innovative geometric forms and created a dynamic, undulating façade that pushed the boundaries of traditional architecture.

Another important work by Borromini is the church of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, built between 1642 and 1660. The church is known for its unique spiral dome and the complex geometry of its floor plan. Borromini's ability to use space and light in innovative ways is particularly evident in this building.

Although Borromini did not receive the same recognition as his rival Bernini during his lifetime, his reputation has improved considerably over the centuries. His works are now appreciated for their bold originality and influence on the development of architecture. Borromini's life ended tragically when he took his own life in Rome in 1667. His legacy, however, lives on in the impressive buildings he left behind.

Interesting fact: Borromini was known for his eccentric personality and intense devotion to architecture. He is reported to have often worked to the point of exhaustion and had a difficult temperament, which led to conflicts with clients and colleagues.
