John William Lizars was a Scottish engraver and illustrator who lived in the 19th century. Born in Edinburgh in 1788, he was part of a family deeply rooted in art and science. His father, Daniel Lizars, was a well-known engraver and publisher, which introduced John William Lizars to the world of art from an early age. This early influence was to have a significant impact on his life and career.

Lizars began his career as an engraver, working closely with his father. He quickly developed a reputation for his precise and detailed work, which was particularly valued at a time when printing technology was still in its infancy. His skills led to him being involved in a wide range of projects, including scientific illustrations and book publications.

A significant turning point in his career was his collaboration with the famous naturalist John James Audubon.
