Jules Cheret

Jules Chéret, born on May 31, 1836 in Paris, was a French painter and lithographer who is considered one of the pioneers of modern poster art. His colorful and dynamic posters shaped the image of the Belle Époque and made him one of the most famous artists of his time. Chéret grew up in a modest family and began his artistic training at the age of 13 as an apprentice to a lithographer. This early experience laid the foundation for his later career.

In the 1850s, Chéret moved to London, where he developed his skills and was influenced by British poster art. After returning to Paris in 1866, he began designing posters for theaters, music halls, and other entertainment events. His work was characterized by vivid colors, elegant compositions, and a masterful command of the lithographic technique. Chéret was known for his depiction of joyful, dancing women, who became known as "Chérettes," a symbol of the joie de vivre of the Belle Époque.

Chéret revolutionized poster art by elevating it from a purely informative form of expression to an artistic one. His works were not only advertising media, but also works of art that shaped the cityscape of Paris. He founded his own printing company, the "Imprimerie Chaix", and produced numerous posters for well-known brands and events. Chéret received numerous awards for his work, including the Legion of Honor in 1890.

Interesting fact: Jules Chéret is often called the "father of the modern poster" because he revolutionized poster art and paved the way for subsequent artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
