Mikuláš Galanda was a key figure in modern Slovak art, born on December 4, 1895 in Turzovka, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia. He studied at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Galanda was known for his ability to combine traditional Slovak themes with modern European art movements, which earned him a unique position in his country's art history.
His work spans a wide range of media, including painting, graphics and book illustration. Galanda's early works were heavily influenced by Slovak folk art and the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. However, over time he developed a distinctive style characterized by a vibrant color palette, dynamic compositions and profound emotional expressiveness. Galanda was also a dedicated educator, teaching at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and shaping a generation of Slovak artists.
