Nikolay Feshin

Nikolay Ivanovich Feshin was born on November 26, 1881 in Kazan, Russia. He was a Russian-American painter known for his portraits and genre paintings. Feshin grew up in an artistic family; his father was a woodcarver, which sparked Nikolay's early interest in art. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of Ilya Repin, one of Russia's foremost painters.

After graduating in 1909, Feshin returned to Kazan, where he taught at the art school and continued to develop his own artistic practice. His works from this period are characterized by a vibrant color palette and dynamic brushwork, demonstrating his ability to depict emotions and characters with great intensity. Feshin's portraits are particularly notable for their ability to capture the personality and inner life of the sitters.

In 1923, Feshin emigrated to the United States to escape the political unrest in Russia. He first settled in New York before settling in Taos, New Mexico, where he was inspired by the local culture and landscape. In Taos, he joined an artists' colony and created some of his best known works. Feshin's American period is marked by a fusion of Russian and American influences, creating a unique artistic language in his paintings.
