Pierre Joseph Redouté

Pierre-Joseph Redouté, born July 10, 1759 in Saint-Hubert, Belgium, was a painter and botanist best known for his precise depictions of flowers. He moved to Paris at a young age to deepen his artistic training. There he found his true calling in botany, which made him the preferred artist of the French aristocracy and later the official court painter to Queen Marie-Antoinette. Despite the political upheavals of his time, Redouté survived the French Revolution and the regimes that followed by making himself indispensable through his art.

Redouté's work is particularly notable for its scientific rigor combined with aesthetic grace. He worked closely with leading botanists of his time and developed a technique of color engraving that enabled him to capture the vivid beauty of the plants he studied. His illustrations contributed significantly to expanding knowledge about plants and popularizing botanical science. His books, including "Les Roses" and "Les Liliacées", are still considered masterpieces of botanical illustration and are sought-after collector's items.

Interesting fact:

One of the lesser known facts about Redouté is that despite his close ties to the French aristocracy and his work for the queen during the French Revolution, he not only survived but was also valued by the revolutionary leaders. He was even commissioned by the infamous Robespierre himself to paint plants for the "Jardin des Plantes", the national botanical garden in Paris.
