Raffaello Sanzio
Raffaello Sanzio, better known as Raphael, was born on April 6, 1483 in Urbino, Italy. He was a major painter and architect of the High Renaissance whose works are known for their clarity of form, lightness of composition, and the visual achievement of Neoplatonism. Raphael was a child prodigy who, from a young age, followed in the footsteps of his father, Giovanni Santi, who was himself a distinguished painter.
Raphael's early training took place in the workshop of Pietro Perugino, one of the leading painters of his time. This training had a lasting impact on Raphael's style, and he quickly developed his own distinctive artistic style. His first important works were created in Perugia and Città di Castello, where he created altarpieces and frescoes that demonstrated his exceptional talent.
In 1504, Raphael moved to Florence, where he was inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. This encounter with the great masters of the Renaissance led to a further development of his style, which was now characterized by greater expressiveness and complexity. In Florence, Raphael created some of his best known Madonnas, including the "Madonna del Cardellino" and the "Madonna del Prato".
In 1508, Raphael was called to Rome by Pope Julius II to decorate the Vatican Stanzas. These frescoes, including the famous "School of Athens," are considered masterpieces of Renaissance art. They demonstrate Raphael's ability to depict complex subjects with clarity and elegance. During his time in Rome, Raphael also worked on numerous portraits and altarpieces that cemented his position as one of the leading artists of his time.
Raphael was not only an outstanding painter, but also a talented architect. In 1514 he was appointed chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica, where he helped design the new building. His architectural designs demonstrate a deep understanding of the principles of classical architecture and a fine sense of proportion and harmony.
Raphael died in Rome on April 6, 1520, on his 37th birthday. Despite his short life, he left behind an impressive body of work that influenced generations of artists. His works of art can be found today in the most important museums in the world and are admired for their beauty and technical perfection.
