Sir William Jardine
Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet, was born on 23 February 1800 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a distinguished naturalist, illustrator and publisher, best known for his work on the popular book series "The Naturalist's Library". Jardine grew up in a wealthy family and developed an early interest in natural history that was to stay with him throughout his life.
Jardine studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied botany and zoology. After completing his studies, he devoted himself to researching and documenting natural history. He was a passionate collector of natural history specimens and built up an impressive collection of birds, fish and insects. This collection served as the basis for many of his later publications.
His best known work, The Naturalist's Library, was a monumental series of books published between 1833 and 1843. The series ran to 40 volumes and covered a wide range of subjects including ornithology, ichthyology, entomology and mammals. Jardine was not only the editor of the series but also contributed to many of the volumes himself. The books were known for their detailed illustrations and were illustrated by some of the finest artists of the time, including Edward Lear.
Jardine was an advocate of popularizing science and was committed to making scientific knowledge accessible to a wide audience. He believed that knowledge of natural history should not be the preserve of scientists alone, but should be made accessible to laypeople as well. This philosophy was reflected in the accessible language and affordable prices of his book series.
In addition to his work as a publisher, Jardine was also active in the scientific community. He was a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Linnean Society of London. His contributions to natural history were highly valued by his contemporaries, and he was widely recognized for his efforts to popularize science.
Fun fact: Jardine was not only a passionate naturalist, but also an avid angler. He combined his love of nature with his passion for fishing and even published a book on fishing, which is considered to be one of the first of its kind.
