Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh, born March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands, was a post-impressionist painter whose work had a profound influence on 20th-century art. Despite his current fame, van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime and suffered from mental health problems and poverty. He only began pursuing his passion for painting in his late twenties, after unsuccessful attempts to work as an art dealer and teacher. Van Gogh's style is known for his vibrant colors, emotional expression, and innovative techniques, which he often found in nature and rural life.

Van Gogh's artistic career, which lasted just a decade, was characterized by intense productivity and experimentation. He produced more than 2,100 works of art, including approximately 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches. His works include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, characterized by their bold coloring and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushstrokes. Van Gogh had a significant influence on the Expressionists in Germany, the Fauvists in France, and the early Modernists in the United States.

Interesting fact:

One of the lesser-known facts about Vincent van Gogh is that it was during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence that he painted some of his most famous works, including "The Starry Night." During this time he suffered from severe psychological problems, but found solace and inspiration in painting. He viewed art as therapy and a path to recovery, which explains his extraordinary productivity during this period of his life.
