Gustave Caillebotte, born August 19, 1848 in Paris, was a French painter often associated with Impressionism, although his works represent a unique blend of realism and impressionism. Caillebotte came from a wealthy family, which gave him the freedom to pursue art without financial worries. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began meeting other Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir in the 1870s.
Caillebotte made his debut as an artist in 1876 at the Second Impressionist Exhibition, where he attracted attention with his realistic depictions of urban life in Paris. His works are characterized by precise perspective and an almost photographic level of detail that set him apart from his Impressionist colleagues. Caillebotte's interest in photography greatly influenced his painting, which is evident in his compositions and use of light and shadow.
Although Caillebotte did not receive the same recognition as some of his contemporaries during his lifetime, he was an important promoter of the Impressionist movement. He supported many of his artist friends financially and purchased their works to save them from financial ruin. After his death in 1894, he left a significant collection of Impressionist artworks to the French state, which can now be seen in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
