Gustave Courbet, born June 10, 1819 in Ornans, France, was an important French painter and a key figure in the realist movement in the 19th century. Courbet grew up in a wealthy family and showed an interest in art from an early age. He moved to Paris to further his artistic education and began to question traditional academic styles of painting.

Courbet was known for his unwavering devotion to Realism, an art movement that opposed the idealized depictions of Romanticism. He believed in depicting the world as it really was, without embellishment or idealization. This philosophy resulted in some of his best-known works, which often depicted everyday scenes and ordinary people in their natural settings.

His famous painting "The Burial at Ornans" (1849-1850) is a prime example of his realist style. It depicts a funeral in his hometown and breaks with tradition by depicting an everyday event on a monumental scale. This work, along with others such as "The Stonebreakers" (1849), caused controversy and made Courbet a central player in the art world of his time.

Courbet was not only a talented painter, but also a politically active person. He was a convinced socialist and actively participated in the Paris Commune of 1871. This political involvement led to his arrest and a six-month prison sentence. After his release, he went into exile in Switzerland 🧀, where he lived until his death on December 31, 1877.

Interesting fact: Courbet was a passionate advocate of artistic freedom and refused to accept the Legion of Honor, France's highest award, because he believed that art should not be judged by state institutions.
