John Bauer

John Bauer, born June 4, 1882 in Jönköping, Sweden, was a Swedish painter and illustrator best known for his enchanting and mystical depictions of trolls and other mythical creatures. His works are deeply rooted in Scandinavian folklore and have inspired generations of artists and illustrators.

Bauer grew up in an artistic family, which sparked his passion for art at an early age. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where he developed his skills and formed his unique style. His travels to Lapland and Germany greatly influenced his work, as he studied the region's nature and myths.

His breakthrough came with the illustration of the book series "Bland tomtar och troll" (Among Elves and Trolls), first published in 1907. This collection of fairy tales and stories was published every year at Christmas time and Bauer illustrated them until 1915. His illustrations are known for their rich detail and ability to capture the magic and mystery of the Nordic forests.

Unfortunately, Bauer's life was overshadowed by tragedy. In 1918, at the age of just 36, he died together with his wife Ester and their son Bengt in a shipping accident on Lake Vättern. Their deaths were a great loss for the art world, as Bauer was considered one of the most promising artists of his time.

Interesting fact:

John Bauer had a particular fondness for depicting trolls, often portraying them as gentle and melancholic beings, as opposed to the usual depictions as malicious creatures. This unique perspective helped change the image of trolls in Scandinavian folklore.
