Sigrid Hjertén

Sigrid Hjertén, born on October 27, 1885 in Sundsvall, Sweden, was one of the most important Swedish artists of the early 20th century. She was a central figure of the Swedish avant-garde and known for her vibrant colors and expressive forms. Hjertén first studied at the art school in Stockholm before moving to Paris in 1909 to continue her education at the Académie Matisse under the direction of Henri Matisse. This experience had a lasting impact on her style and led to a lifelong friendship with Matisse.

In Paris, she also met the Swedish painter Isaac Grünewald, whom she married in 1911. The couple returned to Sweden and became central figures in the Swedish art scene. Hjertén was known for her ability to convey emotions and moods through her artwork. Her paintings are often characterized by an intense color palette and dynamic composition, reflecting the influences of Fauvism and Expressionism.

Despite her artistic successes, Hjertén's life was marked by personal challenges. She suffered from psychological problems that worsened over the years. In the 1930s her health deteriorated and she spent several years in psychiatric institutions. Her last exhibition was in 1936 and she died in 1948 after a failed operation.

Interesting fact:

Sigrid Hjertén was not only a talented painter, but also a passionate dancer. She often incorporated dance movements into her artwork, which further enhanced her dynamic style.
