William Home Lizars

William Home Lizars was born on May 4, 1788 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was an eminent Scottish engraver and painter, best known for his detailed and precise illustrations. Lizars grew up in an artistic family; his father, Daniel Lizars, was a well-known engraver and printer, which certainly had a major influence on his career.

Lizars began his artistic education at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh, where he studied under John Graham. After his father's death in 1812, he took over the family business and continued it successfully. He specialised in the production of engravings and etchings, which were used in various publications.

One of his best known works is the illustration for Sir William Jardine's "The Naturalist's Library", a series of 40 volumes published between 1833 and 1843. This series was known for its detailed and colorful depictions of animals and plants. Lizars' ability to combine fine detail and vivid colors in his engravings made him one of the most sought-after illustrators of his time.

Lizars was also a pioneer in the development of the technique of color printing.
