Alessandro Botticelli

Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli, was born in Florence around 1445. He was one of the most outstanding painters of the Italian Renaissance and is known for his masterful depictions of mythological and religious subjects. Botticelli grew up in a wealthy family, which gave him the opportunity to receive an artistic education. He began his career as an apprentice in the workshop of Fra Filippo Lippi, one of the leading painters of his time, who had a great influence on Botticelli's style.

Botticelli's workshop in Florence was a center of artistic production, and he received numerous commissions from influential families, including the Medici, who were among the most important patrons of the arts in Florence. His works are characterized by their elegant lines, the grace of the figures, and the use of bright colors. Botticelli was a master of composition and created works that are impressive both in their beauty and in their symbolic depth.

One of Botticelli's most famous works is "The Birth of Venus", which dates from around 1485. This painting depicts the Roman goddess Venus being born from the sea and is a prime example of the Renaissance idea of the rebirth of classical antiquity. Another famous work is "Primavera", which is a complex allegory of spring and is full of mythological figures and symbols. Both works can now be seen in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and attract thousands of visitors every year.

Interesting fact:

Botticelli was so influenced by the religious movement of the Dominican monk Girolamo Savonarola that he burned some of his own works that he considered incompatible with Savonarola's teachings.
